Will shows two weeks of product, and why he needs a bigger van
A Painting Business Moving Into Epoxy
Will didn't come to BlueMaster as a beginner. WM Painting & Decorating was already a successful business aimed at the high end of the market. Epoxy was the next step, and he had his team trained by APC. What the new epoxy arm didn't have yet was a steady flow of enquiries.
Starting From Zero
Will already ran a painting business, WM Painting & Decorating, when he decided to launch an epoxy flooring arm alongside it. He'd bought the van and the gear before he had any real pipeline of work to fill it.
"I'm getting it started, getting any leads, really, 'cause I've got another painting business, so I've opened up epoxy and I didn't really know where to start."
"Before I started with you, I think I had two quotes, and I just bought the van and bought everything, so I was in a bit of a panic."
Two quotes total. That was the entire pipeline for a brand new business with a van and equipment already paid for.
Skeptical Going In
Will had been through agencies before that didn't deliver, so signing up again wasn't an easy call.
"I've seen many people's ads — I've been with a couple of agencies that didn't close, didn't deliver on what they said, so it was a big waste of money."
Looking back at the decision now, he doesn't hesitate.
"Investment, big time. 100%."
From 2 Quotes to a Full Week
About a month into working with BlueMaster, WM Epoxy Flooring has generated roughly $30,000 in jobs and Will is quoting eight to nine jobs a week — up from two, total, before he started.
"In the last four weeks, it'd be roughly around 30K... now I think I'm getting about eight, nine quotes a week."
He's aiming to turn epoxy into a full-time crew running alongside the painting business.
"To get leads and just get some traction and get the business flowing — and hopefully very soon I have a full-time team doing epoxy."
Booked Out Three Months in Advance
The result of those first four weeks isn't only the $30,000 in jobs. WM Epoxy Flooring is now booked out three months ahead, so the next quarter of work is already in the diary. Eight to nine quotes a week are still coming in on top of that, and each new enquiry gets a text back within 60 seconds so it doesn't go cold while the crew is on the tools.
Outgrowing the Van
The busier diary has created a good problem. In the second video above, recorded by Will himself, he shows a van packed to the roof with APC flake, around 60 boxes, which is the product for the next two weeks of jobs. He ended up with the same size van the painting business runs, and it isn't close to big enough for epoxy.
"One thing I did not think about when getting this vehicle was how much bigger of a van I needed."
That's the kind of problem a business wants: not enough van, because there's too much work. Will is now looking to upgrade to a larger vehicle to carry a full fortnight of product to site.
An Easy Transition
Asked what the first month working together was actually like, Will kept it simple.
"Very easy, easy transition — you're very easy to get a hold of."
